Hello Everyone,
I am excited to share how God is moving in the Deaf community in The Gambia! Before diving into the latest updates, I want to tell you about an incredible connection with Adan that I haven’t mentioned before. (Pictured below - Adan and me).
After leaving The Gambia in 2019, I felt a strong burden for the country due to the lack of a Bible translation in Gambian Sign Language. In 2022, IMB missionaries invited me to a StoryCamp in Senegal, where Deaf people from four West African nations, including The Gambia, gathered. StoryCamp is a project where participants craft Bible stories in the Deaf community’s heart language. While three nations had some ASL influence, The Gambia had Dutch Sign Language influence, making the crafting process challenging for Deaf Gambians. This deepened my burden for The Gambia.
Adan, passionate about bringing the Word of God to Deaf communities, works with the Global Partnership for Bible Translation. He contacted me two years ago for information on The Gambia while preparing for potential Bible translation training there. We had only met once via video call.
Last year, while working in Brazil, I felt prompted to reconnect with Adan. I mentioned our outreach plans to Holland and Sweden, and surprisingly, we discovered we would both be in Sweden. This unexpected alignment felt like God’s hand at work. My Brazilian team and I arrived in Holland, where I had a vision of West Africa, including The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and more, which I didn’t fully understand then.
In Sweden, Adan and I finally met in person. Our conversations revealed a strong connection to God's purpose, particularly when he mentioned Liberia—a country in my heart. After returning to the US, I prayed for guidance and felt led to Jamaica and The Gambia, but I sensed another destination after Jamaica.
I bought a ticket to Jamaica but felt no peace about a return flight. Trusting God, I waited. A few days later, Adan invited me to join his team in Liberia for Bible translation training! After Jamaica, I went to Liberia and found it an excellent opportunity to support Deaf Liberians.
Additionally, I will join Adan and his team in Sierra Leone from July 22 to August 3! I now see how God connected us so that I can support his team in helping Deaf people develop their heart language in the West African nations that God had shown me back in Holland.
SCRIPTURE
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
I’ve seen God’s incredible work among the Deaf in The Gambia! Romans 8:28 rings true as we’ve prayed, reconnected unexpectedly, and formed crucial partnerships. Each step shows God’s hand guiding me and Adan to bring His Word to the Deaf community in their heart language. I now understand my purpose: to mobilize for the Bible translation training to fulfill God’s plan.
